Things hadn’t been looking up for Jonathan, a local newspaper reporter in the area of New Hope. Sales had been going down and the newspaper was in some serious hot water after it’s report of a missing girl's body being found was wrong.

Jonathan hated the fact that he found himself in the whole mess. He couldn’t speak for his other workers but he was someone who spent a lot of time on the story he was working on until he was satisfied with the information he had. It may have gotten him in trouble for missing deadlines, but it paid off for the most part with not one of his articles getting called out for any false information.

Stressed out by the recent news and outrage of his company's latest article, Jonathan headed down to a cozy restaurant that he had passed a couple of times when traveling around town. The inn was quite old looking but was mostly up to date inside. It sat near a small waterfall on the left of it, and to the right was a railroad crossing. The parking lot wasn’t the best, as it was quite small, but luckily for Jonathan it was mostly empty.
Once seated, Jonathan looked at his menu to see what there was to eat. Once the waiter had come he asked for a water and some toast. He wasn’t exactly that hungry at the moment. The waiter came back with his toast and water. Jonathan thanked the waiter and took a sip of water.

Once putting his water back down however, he started hearing a rumbling noise. Jonathan looked outside at the window to see a steam train carrying some box cars passing by. The black steam train passed by, boxcars, caboose and all. Everyone seemed shocked and surprised by the event that took place.

It may not have seemed strange, but there were 2 problems with this engine that passed by. For starters, the said track that was next to the restaurant was not only abandon but in great decay, with wood and even missing rails in places, yet the train went over it like there was nothing wrong. Second, this was 2012, the only Steam engines in New Hope where the passenger trains at New Hope and Ivyland, and they never carried any boxcars or fright for any reason.

Everyone in the restaurant seemed quite taken back by this train passing. Chatter arose with everyone asking and wondering what they had just seen. As soon as she came around Jonnathan asked for his check. After paying Jonathan rushed out of the restaurant and looked both ways at the track. Dispute it being not that long before the train had passed, it was gone.

All that was there was the abandon (or what should be) decaying track.

“That had to be some sort of ghost train…” Jonathan said to himself. “There’s no way that a train could travel on these tracks perfectly without crashing or coming off the tracks…”

Instead of going back to his colleagues and telling them what he saw, Jonathan decided to keep this to himself, and investigate. What train did he just see and what happened to it?

Investigating the exact engine wouldn’t exactly be easy as Jonathan never really got a chance to see the numbers on the engine. A look in history books didn’t record any accidents that had happened and in fact, nothing about a train passing thru the restaurant has ever been recorded.

Jonnathan tried to at the least record the incident once more. Problem was however...it didn’t happen again. Jonathan went to the restaurant during the same time it happened, during nighttime, and even during when trains back then were running their courses through the town, but nothing…

Eventually, Jonathan had forgotten about the ghost train. As significant and strange as the event was, it was hard to remember when he had story after story to write about, and work started piling up for him. The next time he would find himself at the restaurant is when they were having an anniversary. After taking some pictures, something caught Jonathan's eye.

Out of nowhere, and with barely any sound was the phantom train once more passing by, this time looking truly like a ghost train. The grey apparition of the train passed by silently, like it was on mute, and disappeared quickly.

“Old engine 15…”

Jonathan turned around to see an old  man, wearing big thick glasses and overalls.

“I remember riding the caboose of that train. It was a normal day, I had been working for the railroad for a while, it was a summer job for me as a teen. Then...one day, while riding that said train...it crashed. Came off the rails, and I don’t know how, but I know there were some serious injuries and deaths in it. I made it out ok, but I can’t say the same for the others…”
While I may not have an idea for a new original prose/story, I do have idea's for short stories, such as this one.
